S3 Update II

August 9, 2007

I’m going to let the Zonbu run all night and see if my files synch.

It looks like some of the transparent caching and web magic that we do at the data center was impacting the Zonbu’s ability co ommunicate with the S3 server.

We’ll see in the morning. 🙂

Hunting the S3 storage problem – may be local

August 9, 2007

I have been conversing with Tim from Zonbu support today, looking to resolve my S3 storage issues.

Based on Tim’s assessment of my debug.log file, he says there appears to be a timeout on our end.  This may be the case.

We have a fairly complex caching infrastructure in place for HTTP traffic.  It is transparent to the end user, but it does have some unusual rules.  Once of these configuration nuances may be the culprit.

The Zonbu speaks HTTP to the S3 servers (something I’m not thrilled about but I also don’t know what other options are offered by S3).

I have now exempted the S3 site from the bulk of these unusual local rules to see if the problem clears up.  I will keep you posted.

PS – Look for a future article on what Zonbu can do to optimize the experience on the “local loop” of the broadband network.  File access was something Mossberg complained strongly about, optimizing this is important.

USB KVM comes in handy with the Zonbu

August 9, 2007

IOGear USB KVM switchI use a USB keyboard and mouse on my home system.

I recently picked up an IOGear 4 port USB keyboard, mouse, video, sound switch – and I love it.

Basically, it allows me to share one VGA monitor and my keyboard/mouse/sound amongst four machines. So I have my XP box and my Zonbu on it, and two spare ports…

They are listening – Beta now front and center

August 9, 2007

Logo BetaSo, I’m watching the Mossberg video I mentioned in my last post.

And I noticed something.

Check out the Zonbu logo to the right.

I guess Gregoire (Zonbu CEO) and I may agree on what beta is afterall… (You can, and should, read his comment, found on this post, about the the whole “beta” concept.)…

WSJ Columnist Walt Mossberg on the Zonbu

August 9, 2007

WSJ LogoReader Gregg just tipped us off that Walter Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal has a new video review, running about five minutes, of the Zonbu.

[EDIT: I’ve watched the video, my thoughts on it after the jump…]

Mr. Zonbu crosses 10,000 page reads

August 9, 2007

Growth ChartReaders, today is a historic day for this blog.

As of 11:11 US Eastern time this morning, we crossed the 10,000 page read mark.

Not bad for a site that didn’t exist three weeks ago.

Clearly there is a lot of interest in the Zonbu and it’s potential.

Stay tuned for more articles and analysis from Mr. Zonbu.

Zonbu S3 Storage Update

August 9, 2007

A quick update on my S3 storage findings.

I just checked the web interface and my Videos directory, as well as one of the four videos, now appears on the S3 servers.

The video that did transfer is about 38MB in size.

Last night, before I went to bed, I downloaded a LiveCD of Clonezilla, about 113MB. I put it in a folder that should be replicated as well.

I intentionally left the machine on for eight hours while I slept, as that should have provided ample time to synch the file while the device was idle. That LiveCD file has not yet appeared, nor have about 40MB of additional videos that should synch soon.

Zonbu have asked for my debug.log, which I will send today.

Zonbu community edition installer broken

August 9, 2007

Magic hatYesterday I tried to re-install the Zonbu OS inside my VMware system at the office.

I wanted to be able to “login” to my account at work and see the magic of having all my documents and settings be available when I was physically away from my Zonbu.

I downloaded the script and ran it

It didn’t work, so I took at look to see why…
