The future of Flash memory

August 13, 2007

CNet LogoCNet has compiled a series of articles on the Flash Memory business, highly relevant to the Zonbu and it’s CF based business model.

Take a peek.

Pout for me, Baby!

August 13, 2007

Zonbu MotherboardOur friend Dave J is quite a good photographer.

He spent a few hours with his beautiful new Zonbu yelling “Pout for me, baby! Pout for me!” (At least I think that’s what he said, my Dutch is kind of rusty…)

The results of his work can be seen on flickr.

When readers become writers…

August 13, 2007

Dave J's Zonbu portsOne of our regulars, Dave Jansen, has started blogging about his experiences with his Zonbu.

At the moment he is in Europe, but he is on the move to South Korea later this month. His Zonbu is making the journey with him.

To read about his Zonbu, his experiences and his globe-trotting perspective, check out his blog:

Throwing the Zonbu in the deep end…

August 13, 2007

Zonbu Beta LogoI’ve been conversing with Gregoire at Zonbu.

He agreed to send me a test unit to put in our lobby.

The unit is replacing a Windows XP machine that we had mildly locked down and that was used for public Internet access by random customers who pass through the lobby.

The timing is excellent, the machine arrived today and we had it installed and operational in minutes.

This includes the fact that the machine uses Wi-Fi for connectivity…

Is the grass greener on the other side? Part I

August 12, 2007

Green PastureI spent an obscene amount of time yesterday playing with different alternate Linux distros on the Zonbu

I had Ubuntu Feisty 7.04, Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 (Tribe 4) and DreamLinux all running on my Zonbu.

I attempted Freespire 2.0, but never did get it work. There is a bootloader issue that I’m going to try and resolve later today.

So what did I learn? Let’s talk about Ubuntu. More after the jump…

Rhapsody bug work-around; get on FF

August 11, 2007 LogoI discovered when I upgraded to Firefox that I couldn’t get the player to install properly from

I’m certain the problem is on the end, and I’m alarmed they haven’t fixed it yet.

In the mean time, I’ve found a direct URL that you can use (at your own risk) to install the player extension in Firefox.

I used it and it worked fine for me.

You can download the Rhapsody Player Plugin here.

A Gutsy Move…

August 11, 2007

Well, due to having to upgrade the kernel to Gutsy in to order to get sound support, and then having to compile against that kernel to get the right video driver, X didn’t like the driver since it was compiled against different modules than the X-Server itself.

Don’t know what I’m talking about?

That’s fine, that’s why you should buy a Zonbu in the first place! Even so, stay with me. I’m downloading the Gutsy ISO so I can install that and hopefully get the correct video driver working, and then report back.

Still don’t know what I’m on about? Ignore this post and enjoy the rest of the blog. It is almost all non-technical.

Zonbuntu? I feel kind of guilty…

August 11, 2007

Ubuntu LogoI have to admit I feel kind of guilty.

This afternoon I’m installing Ubuntu on an alternate 8GB flash card to see how it performs on the Zonbu hardware.

I’ve put my 8GB Sandisk Extreme III card (with the Zonbu OS stack) away for safe keeping.

So far, things seem to be going ok. In fact, I’m writing this from the Zonbu box, via Firefox under Ubuntu.

I installed the Ubuntu Feisty 7.04 Desktop, did the recommended package updates via their tool, and then followed these docs on the Zonbu forums to get the audio working

Storage problem resolved – It wasn’t Zonbu/S3

August 10, 2007

I can finally confirm that the storage issues are resolved and it turned out not to be the Zonbu/S3 service, but rather some transparent network proxying on my end.

I want to say thanks to the Zonbu support team that worked with me on this.

In the process we discovered a few improvements that can be made, and also, I think opened a few eyes as to the various transparent things broadband operators do to optimize their networks.
